The Meaning Behind Our Design
Our sport is more than just paddling—it’s
about teamwork, resilience, and pushing forward with strength and purpose. The design we have incorporated in the new NZDBA Board Shirts, Nationals merchandise and
the NZ Black Dragons uniform reflects these values.
-
Kowhaiwhai
Seen on whare, waka, and paddles, this pattern represents new beginnings. Every stroke, every race, every season brings fresh opportunities to grow, improve, and strive for excellence.
-
Puhoro (Split Koru)
A symbol of speed, agility, and movement, the puhoro embodies the power of the water beneath us and the energy that drives us forward. It mirrors the relentless momentum of a dragon boat in full flight.
-
Mangopare (Hammerhead Shark)
The ultimate emblem of strength and determination, the mangopare reminds us to never back down, to face challenges head-on, and to channel our inner warrior on and off the water.
-
Taniko (Niho Taniwha)
This traditional weave pattern speaks to stability, the foundation of our sport.
Just as a dragon boat moves only when paddlers are in perfect sync, this design element reinforces the importance of unity, discipline, and trust.
These tohu are a reflection of who we are as a dragon boat community. It represents the journey we take together, the strength we build in every race, and the passion that fuels us. It connects us to the rich heritage of Aotearoa while celebrating the dynamic spirit of our
sport.
Whether you are a paddler, a coach, a supporter, or a part of the wider dragon boating whānau, this design is a reminder
of the mana we bring to the water—one stroke at a time. We hope you like it!
